Crunch time

There's a lot to be said for deadlines. A deadline is a lot like a finish line for me. It's a goal to reach. I don't really work well without deadlines. I need some endpoint to reach or I will procrastinate forever. I like having a deadline because it's something to work towards and adds a sense of urgency to my work. If I were more on top of things I could probably work without a deadline. For me though, have deadlines allows me to prioritize things on my ever expanding to-do list. This week I am pretty pleased to have made a deadline for getting the data wrangled into a report for an upcoming conference. I am bleary eyed, my head is pounding and I am so ridiculously exhausted that my ability to remember how to do simple tasks is greatly diminished. But I finished that report. It may not be pretty but it is done. After my adviser goes over it there will be more to do but for now, I'm done. It's nice to have a sense of accomplishment after a crappy week of Emma being sick and now apparently I'm getting sick. I can't wait to get back to a life where I'm reasonably well rested and feeling good. A life where I don't just begin each day counting down to the time when I can go back to bed, a time when my head isn't trying to explode. But until then, I will drink my hot tea and eat my soup and keep on keepin' on.

  1. Exhaustion is so much a part of the life of a new parent. You set little goals like when she first sleeps all night, you can too. Then she will start eating people food so you don't have to make the special meals and bottles. There are are other little milestones along the way that help you slowly emerge from the Zombie stage. Then the next thing you know, they are all grown up, happy & independent and you have too much time for yourself. I guess we are funny creatures.
